My horse Rogue is letting me ride her with great enthusiasm and anticipation. She sees me and gets extremely excited after she and I worked together the past couple of days. It's only a walk for now with turning and backing, but pretty soon we will be working up to a trot and canter. I got my sidepull in the mail with custom reins (the poppers have her name burned in: Rogue). I hope she enjoys it when I put it on her. I have to adjust the chin strap to fit to it appropriately without hurting her any =) I am happy about my girl! I met my goal to ride by my birthday so I could ride on it (October 30th). I cannot express how proud I am. No saddle just a sidepull and reins and WE GO! ^_^ Rogue sure is my baby!

So, I got the idea from what Robin does with her horse "Rogue" calling her by whistle. I'm trying it out when I use both my pinky fingers in my mouth my whistles sounds like some kind of wooden flute or something. I tried whistling it then calling her name. Selene actually comes to me though I don't know if that is just because she wants to see me or if it's because she's responding to the whistle and name calling or just the name and she thinks the whistle is just to get her attention.

I'm getting my first horse tomorrow =D It's at least 16hh thoroughbred mare it a deep bay or black with a blaze and her right eye lash is white so it gives a ghost like effect which is awesome. Her name is Selene(coggins as Celine but I like it spelled with an S better). Gotta get some meat on her though I saw ribs so hopefully that turns out well. Too bad I won't be able to just jump from the ground onto her back like I can do with Rogue (Robin's horse).

Pictures soon =D

Rogue Progresses

This morning I was able to get out and work with Rogue for about an hour. My four year old filly was sure full of it and did not want to stop. In fact, she got antsy when my barn manager came up and started discussing stuff with us when I was working her; had to stop her and listen to be respectful. She hadn't been worked in days and gets rather energetic to be brought out of the stall and handled. The more I handle her, the more she wants (which I love).

She has been working very well with her lunging. I can give her all verbal cues without having to follow her movements with the lunge whip (back up for when she thinks she wants to act up- don't hit her with it at all; it just cruises behind her to help drive her forward sometimes). She was just walking and trotting, but now I have her cantering nicely as well. Her stops are magnificent too. My girl no longer tries to keep walking up to me. She stops on the "whoa" cue and waits right in place until I tell her, "Come here" and she comes up for the side swap.

I can get on her back without her shifting around or trying to move from me. She let's my fiancé (David) lead her and give her cues to respond to as I use my legs to try to get her to register the two together. It's a neat technique which seems to be working =)

I am about to order her some custom tack from Sunsethalters.com so that I can ride her and not deal with bits. I've decided bitless is the way to go with her, especially since I had made sure the bit was not tight on her, and she had major galls on the corners of her mouth without it being messed with. She will respond better without it anyways. She is already so responsive to just the mildest of pressures (barely any pressure needs to be applied to get her to back on her stubborn days; on her good days she doesn't need anything but the cue), so a side pull will be enough for her ^_^

I am very proud of my girl. She's been highly motivated to work and tries her best not to be too sassy (though sometimes she cannot resist). I know I need to work her out on the grass; the round pen is just not worth it with the packed clay flooring. It makes her sore in the feet, so I am moving her training elsewhere. The only time I will use the round pen is for when I mount her or just plan on walking her around. I am hoping to make more progress with her in the next coming weeks, because my goal is to ride her on my birthday. She loves when I am on her, and I'll be darned if I don't love it too!

My sweet little Kinsley took a blow to the upper left front leg today. Cut her right in the muscle area... It nicked an artery and was spurting blood. Thank goodness I was there. I put cold compresses on her and got the bleeding stopped. She was hurting so bad... poor baby. She actually had tears coming out of one eye. I got the bleeding stopped and cold hosed her for a while and gave her 2.5 grams of banamine. Bless her heart, she's only 8 weeks old. That brought back so many horrifying memories of the day 2 years ago I lost my 7 week old Racing Kaine. I was a mess and so scared. The vet did xrays and she's going to be just fine... nothing bad, Kinsley's just going to be sore for a few days. Thank God she's ok.

Finally had the vet out on Friday and by that evening she was showing great improvement.
Ban Horse Slaughter in Canada!

With nearly 94,000 horses slaughtered in 2009 alone, Canada's horse slaughter industry is among the largest in the world and a shameful betrayal of our loyal companions.

There have been many reported cases of animal welfare violations in Canadian horse slaughterhouses. Veterinary experts have denounced horse slaughter as inherently inhumane since the animals' extreme response in the kill chute makes it difficult to stun them. And shocking new video footage of the slaughter process casts serious doubt on the Canadian Food Inspections Agency’s ability to ensure proper protocols are followed.

But it is not just horses who need protection. Consumers are at serious risk of ingesting a banned chemical found in horse meat. Horses are not raised as food animals and many of them come into contact with a drug called phenylbutazone – commonly known as bute. Phenylbutazone is banned for use in any animal intended for human consumption because it can cause toxic reactions in humans. Mechanisms to ensure the removal of horses treated with substances such as bute from the food chain are inadequate at best.

We are calling on you to help raise awareness and support Bill C-544 to put a halt to the cruel and dangerous horse meat industry.

TAKE ACTION: Write to your Member of Parliament today to urge support for a federal ban on horse slaughter

http://e-activist.com/ea-campaign/clientcampaign.do?ea.client.id=104&ea.campaign.id=7383&ea.param.extras=Source%3Aemail080510
